What is HUEA?
We organize various advising events throughout the year that are geared toward helping undergraduate concentrators in economics figure out what to do and how to navigate the department. Past events have included peer mentorship mixers and office hours, internship and career presentations, and panels on thesis writing, undergraduate research opportunities, and graduate school.
We also aim to provide the opportunity for students to get to know the Economics Department through dinners and other events. We host casual dinners with economics professors throughout the year and a larger catered dinner event each semester.
We seek to foster economics education and interest in the wider community. Our flagship event is the Harvard Pre-Collegiate Economics Challenge (HPEC), an economics competition for high school students held each spring. We also organize intercollegiate networking events and mixers bringing together economics students throughout the Boston area.
ARTICLE I. - Name
- The name of the organization shall be the Harvard Undergraduate Economics Association.
ARTICLE II. - Purpose
- The Harvard Undergraduate Economics Association will serve as a forum for undergraduate students interested in economics. Its activities will include regular meetings, seminars, discussions with professional economists, peer advising, closer interaction with the economics department faculty, and other relevant programs.
ARTICLE III. - Membership
- Membership in this organization shall be open to all students in good standing currently enrolled in Harvard College, regardless of race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, or physical disability
- Membership shall be retained until the student severs relations with the University whether by graduation or otherwise. Membership will be retained during the vacations and recesses of the University.
- All members shall pay such annual dues as may be designated from time to time.
- Any member may resign at any time by filing a written resignation with a member of the Executive Board.
ARTICLE IV. - Officers
- Officers of the group will sit on the general board. A subset of general board members will also sit on the executive board.
- Board members of the group will include those individuals appointed specific responsibilities for club programs and events and will assist the executive board members in running group activities. Board members who fail to attend a majority of regular club meetings may lose board member status as determined by a majority vote of the executive board
- The executive board will govern the group and establish policies, programs, and goals for implementation. It will also manage its finances, keep accurate records of meetings, and handle its formal correspondence.
- The executive board will consist of the President and the Vice-Presidents of Academic Affairs, Events, and Operations and other positions as deemed necessary by the executive board. Additionally, all past Presidents still enrolled in the College will remain on the executive board.
- Members of executive board and general board may be impeached by a unanimous vote of the executive board, excluding the member in question, if applicable.
- The President will have veto power over all group programs, events, and policy decisions with the exception of amendment and impeachment proceedings.
ARTICLE V. - Elections
- The executive board members of the group will elect new executive board members each April. Each executive board member’s term of office will start two weeks after elections and end two weeks after the following year’s elections.
- Any undergraduate member of the general board may apply for office as an executive board member. Nominations shall be filed in writing with the president at least two weeks before the date appointed for elections. All executive board members shall have one vote by secret ballot. Executive board members may vote by written proxy if necessary. An executive board member will inform all general board members of the election date and candidates.
- Any undergraduate member of the group may apply for a general board member position. Applications must be submitted to a designated officer by a specified date in the months of September and February. The executive board shall then select the general board members. The term of office for board members shall start immediately upon selection and shall end two weeks after the following year’s September election of board members.
- Terms of office for board members and executive board members may be renewed through regular election proceedings.
ARTICLE VI. - Meetings
- The group will hold regular meetings to determine policy, activities, programs, and other business.
- A simply majority of the group shall constitute a quorum
- The President shall chair all meetings. The Vice Presidents will jointly chair meetings in the President’s absence.
- The President or designated board member will inform members of all meetings.
- All members shall have one vote with respect to any resolution put forward during a meeting. Members may vote by written proxy if necessary. Resolutions may not violate terms set by the Constitution.
ARTICLE VII. - Amendments
- This constitution may be amended by a unanimous vote of the executive board.
- Any three members of the group may propose an amendment. Proposals shall be filed in writing with an executive board member prior to a meeting or by post or email to all executive board members during the summer, so that the group may debate the proposal. Amendments may be voted on at regular meetings or by email during University recesses.
